FOSDEM finalizes embedded track sessions

The program of events has been finalized for the Embedded Operating System Development track of the Free and Open Source Developers' European Meeting, Feb. 20-21, 2004 in Brussels, Belgium. The two-day program includes 10 sessions, most all of which relate to embedded Linux and/or open source software. (more…)

LR101 achieves first release

The LR101 Linux Router project has achieved its first release, after more than six months of work. LR101 aims to build a VPN router supporting all major routing protocols on a standardized hardware platform based on VIA mini-ITX motherboards running embedded Linux. (more…)

Linux headed for worldwide smartphone domination

Linux may become the preferred operating system in a full-featured mobile device and handset market in which “there is no economic reason to question why growth will not be explosive,” according to Seamus McAteer, senior analyst and managing partner, Zelos Group. “The mass adoption of full-featured handsets will be disruptive,” adds McAteer. H.264 decoder for Linux supports DVD-quality VoD over DSL

Digital video products and technology specialist Sentivision is shipping an H.264 decoder for Texas Instruments MD64x digital media processors that it says can bring DVD-quality, real-time video-on-demand (VoD) to Linux systems over broadband and wireless Internet connections. (more…)

MacOS X apps on Zaurus project seeks developers

Dr. H. Nikolaus Schaller reports progress in the mySTEP project to run MacOS X applications on the Sharp Zaurus. Though not yet ready for production, the newest release brings more maturity and features, and Dr. Schaller invites anyone interested in integrating mobile, low-cost handheld computers with MacOS X-based IT applications to contact the project. “Pervasive Internet” will soon be pervasive, study finds

Harbor Research has published a 210-page research report examining the current state of Internet-enabled device networking — the “Pervasive Internet” — at the start of 2004. The report asserts that “we are clearly on the verge of large-scale adoption” of pervasive Internet technology. (more…)

Tools aim to smooth RTOS-to-Linux porting

MontaVista has partnered with code analysis tool specialist Klocwork on tools and services to help port applications from legacy RTOSes (real-time operating systems) to MontaVista Linux. The partnership revolves around Klocwork's inForce and inSight products, which the companies say have been enhanced with custom reports targeting deployment on MontaVista Linux. (more…)

Embedded Linux powers Taiwanese video instruction system

Schools in Taiwan will soon use embedded Linux based systems to provide continuing education courses to teachers through inexpensive video-on-demand (VoD) devices. Additionally, by Q3 2004, some 100,000 educational VoD units are expected to roll out for use by Taiwanese students. (more…)

New Red Hat technical journal comes with code

Red Hat will launch a bi-monthly technical magazine in March called Wide Open. Each issue will feature three CDs of software such as new Fedora project releases. Yearly, six-issue subscriptions cost $59.70, with an introductory price of $35.95. Wide Open adds to the Red Hat Magazine Red Hat has published in Europe for some time. (more…)

Linux application analyzer adds Itanium support, open drivers, more

Intel has released a new version of its VTune Performance Analyzer for Linux, featuring fully Linux-native support for Itanium processors, a command-line interface, open source drivers that support custom kernels, and more. Intel says the tool targets mainly the optimization of financial, engineering, scientific, and multimedia applications. (more…)

Rendering technology optimizes viewing of Web content on mid-size displays

Opera Software has announced “Medium-Screen Rendering” (MSR) technology similar to its Small-Screen Rendering (SSR) technology for rendering Web content on small displays.
