Ref design for network devices includes hardware, uClinux

CyberGuard and Intel have teamed up on a hardware/software reference design for network devices based on uClinux. The design includes a SnapGear Linux (uClinux) development kit from Cyberguard, and an XScale based reference board from Intel. (more…)

OSDL takes Linux back to school

The Open Source Development Labs (OSDL) is courting institutions of higher learning through a new program aimed at attracting affiliates interested in Linux research and deployment. Browsers gang up against plugin hell

A group of web browser and plugin vendors today released an improved browser plugin API aimed at enabling web developers to make multimedia Web content more interactive. EU-funded real-time Linux project jumps on experimental new technology

[updated June 30, 2004] The HYADES project to bring real-time capabilities to user-space Linux programs will embrace an experimental technology released just days ago. Free Java IDE digests huge Sun code donation

At the JavaOne tradeshow today in San Francisco, Sun Microsystems announced contributions to a new release of the free, open source NetBeans IDE that is expected to begin beta testing in July. The NetBeans 4.0 release will include full J2EE support, a performance profiler, refactoring capabilities, and expanded J2ME support. (more…)

Consumer Linux confab turns one, releases spec

The Consumer Electronics Linux Forum (CELF) celebrated its one-year anniversary today by releasing its first Specification and Reference Implementation. Sun revs wireless Java development tools with beta release

Sun Microsystems has launched a beta version of its toolbox for developing J2ME wireless applications. The J2ME Wireless Toolkit version 2.2 beta includes an improved device emulator (pictured), as well as new APIs for 3D graphics, multimedia messaging, Bluetooth, and file manipulation. (more…)

Microsoft eases “shared source” restrictions

Microsoft will make its “Shared Source” embedded OS license much less restrictive, starting with the July release of Windows CE 5.0, according to an article at WindowsForDevices.com. ARM1136 core pulses to fiber channel beat

LSI Logic is shipping an ARM1136-based core for cell-based ASIC (application-specific integrated circuit) applications that it says is both the fastest ARM1136 core available, and the first delivered in RTL with a reference design. The ARM1136J-S core runs at 425MHz — a key fiber channel frequency, LSI says — and includes an MMU for full Linux support. (more…)

Intel rounds out Pentium M “Dothan” family

Intel is shipping two new processors in its “Pentium M” line targeting mobile and low-power embedded devices. The 1.5GHz “715” and 1.6GHz “725” are Dothan chips built with 90nm technology that will enable “a broader range of Intel Centrino mobile technology-based mobile PCs at lower price points,” according to Intel. Free software tool automates embedded Linux implementations

Nexedi.org has published an article introducing “umibuilder,” an interesting free software tool that “allows rapid creation of [shrink] wrapped GNU/Linux solutions which can then be distributed on flash memory or on live CD.” The tool is perhaps most useful for automating security updates of embedded systems incorporating Mandrake Linux.
