Itanium/Linux confab deemed a big success

MontaVista OEMs OS for Moto telecom platform

Motorola will sell telecommunications equipment pre-installed with a telecom-specific version of MontaVista Linux, according to the terms of a “formal OEM relationship” between the two companies announced today. (more…)

MontaVista boasts of top NEP customers

MontaVista has announced that six well-known network equipment providers (NEPs) use the telecom-specific version of MontaVista Linux. Alcatel, Agilent UK, Ericsson, NEC, Nokia, and Samsung are all active users of MontaVista Linux Carrier Grade Edition (CGE), the company says, along with three other well-known NEPs unnamed in the announcement. Nokia funding Minimo browser project, anonymous sources say

According to a CNET story published last week, Nokia underwrote the Minimo project, an effort to create a standards-compliant browser for embedded use by shrinking Mozilla. The worldwide mobile phone leader currently uses the commercial Opera browser in most of its browser-equipped products. (more…)

P2P VoIP app available for beta testing on Linux

Skype Technologies is beta testing a Linux version of its VoIP (voice over IP) software based on peer-to-peer (P2P) networking. The Linux version of “Skype” offers the same features as the Windows version, the company says, and was developed by engineers who previously developed KaZaA, a popular P2P filesharing application. Wind River’s Eclipse-based IDE reaches general availability

Wind River is now shipping its integrated development environment (IDE) based on the Eclipse platform. Workbench 2.0 supports Linux, in-house embedded operating systems, and Wind River's proprietary VxWorks real-time operating system (RTOS) and Wind River hopes it will enable companies using multiple RTOSes to standardize on a single development environment. TimeSys stakes out Carrier Grade Linux 2.0 claim

TimeSys says it will ship a version of Linux compliant with the Open Source Development Lab Carrier Grade Linux (CGL) 2.0 specification before September. The OSDL's CGL specification defines features and functionality required by equipment running Linux in the telecommunications market. (more…)

Tiny wall-wart sized T-Engine PC runs Linux, TRON

Personal Media Corp. is selling a tiny, rugged PC that supports Linux but is meant to demonstrate the T-Engine platform for embedded systems. The $1,909.11 (207,900 Yen) “Teacube” measures 2 by 2 by 1.8 inches (52 x 52 x 48mm) and weighs 5.8 ounces (165 grams). (more…)

Multicast protocol implementations available on Linux

Communications protocol software specialist Data Connection Limited (DCL) is shipping the first two products in a line of multicast protocol implementations targeting OEMs building multicast-enabled routers and switches that run Linux and other embedded OSes.
