Open source Linux PBX software gains commercial version

Digium will ship in Q2, 2005, a commercial Linux PBX (private branch exchange) software package based entirely on the open source Asterisk PBX. Asterisk Business Edition will support voice and data transport over TDM, switched, and Ethernet architectures, and has undergone extensive stress-testing, the company says. (more…)

Adlink spins two Intel-based ETX modules

Low-cost MIPS board targets wired, wireless routers

MikroTik has launched a line of inexpensive, low-powered SBCs (single-board computers) for wired and wireless routers. The RouterBoard 500 series starts at $140, runs Linux, and features twin mini-PCI sockets and triple Ethernet ports. An optional daughtercard adds four mini-PCI and six Ethernet ports. (more…)

DRM to find acceptance at last on mobile phones?

DRM (digital rights management) technology is poised for success on mobile phones, according to market research firm Parks Associates. Updated speech SDKs support Linux

Fonix Speech has released updates to its two principal speech software development kits (SDK). Both DECtalk text-to-speech (TTS) and VoiceIn Standard Edition automatic speech recognition (ASR) support Linux, and have gained new features and support for other major operating systems, according to the company. ARM Linux kernel tracking service launches

An ARM Linux consultancy and SBC (single-board computer) designer in the UK has launched a nifty online resource for the ARM Linux community. The “[email protected]” site publishes results from a kernel auto-build system called KAutobuild that is set up to test out every new Linux kernel on 48 ARM-based targets. (more…)

GPL police fingers embedded Linux dirty dozen at CeBIT

The founder of the GPL Violations Project has contacted a baker's dozen (13) of alleged GPL violators at this week's giant CeBIT trade show in Germany, according to CNET. Harald Welte, who also authored the ubiquitous iptables/netfilter firewall application, founded the project to raise awareness about obligations, the story says. (more…)

New PowerPC 440 SoC targets networking, storage

AMCC (Applied Micro Circuits Corp.) will sample in Q2, 2005, a new low-power PowerPC SoC (system-on-chip) targeting networking and storage control plane applications. The 440GR offers faster performance and lower power use than earlier 440-series chips, and is suitable for line cards, multi-radio devices, and control systems, AMCC says. (more…)

3.5-inch Via Eden SBC runs Linux

BCM Advanced Research has released an SBC (single-board computer) in a 3.5-inch format with support for embedded Linux. The EBC3266 is a scalable platform for all VIA Eden processors, from 400MHz to 1.0GHz. It targets medical, POS, kiosk, and digital multimedia applications, according to the company. (more…)

PC/104 stacks up growth

The market for PC/104 modules shows “strong and continuing viability,” according to a study of the global marketplace by VDC (Venture Development Corporation). PC/104, PC/104-Plus, and PCI-104 are set for growth over the next four years, with PCI-104 the fastest growth segment, the research firm says. (more…)

Claimed-fastest EPIC board runs Linux on Via Eden

Octagon Systems is shipping what it says is the fastest EPIC SBC (single-board computer) available. The XE-900 has a 1GHz Via Eden CPU, and is available with a Linux 2.6-based development kit. MontaVista opens branch office in Taiwan

[Updated Mar. 22, 2005]DigiTimes reports that founder and CEO Jim Ready inaugurated a MontaVista branch office in Taiwain this week. MontaVista nets two percent of its revenues in Taiwan, and launched a Taiwan branch on March 1, the Taiwanese tech daily says. (more…)
