Cell Linux port heads for mainstream kernel tree

[Updated Jun. 29, 2005] — IBM, Sony, and Toshiba have ported Linux to the Cell processor, and hope to merge their patches into the next major Linux kernel release, 2.6.13. The port includes a 64-bit PowerPC kernel, and a filesystem availing it of the chip's multiple independent vector processing units. (more…)

Open source telephony app server evolves

An open source telephony application server project has released its second major version to developers. Bayonne 2 features a simpler driver model, support for wired and protocol-stack-based drivers, and both an interface library and voice application server. Linux WiFi stack aims enterprise features at SMBs

Motorola readies tri-band Linux/Java phone

[Updated 12:30PM] — Motorola will ship another Linux/Java phone in Q4 2005. The E895 is a tri-band GSM cameraphone with a 1.3 megapixel camera, large TFT/LCD display, Bluetooth, and rich Internet, multimedia, and web capabilities, Motorola says. Security processors target WiMAX base stations, CPE

Cavium has announced that its Linux-friendly line of security processors is available with microcode and SDKs supporting WiMAX access point and CPE (customer premises equipment) development. Additionally, the company says Nex-G used its Nitrox II security processor in a sixteen-sector WiMAX base station. (more…)

Linux box serves up embedded Java

Sun Microsystems, Via Technologies, and iGoLogic Inc. will debut an x86-based development kit for embedded applications based on Sun's Java 2, Standard Edition (J2SE), next week at Java One. RFID reader development kit includes Linux BSP

Linux distributor ships security appliances

Astaro has embedded its own Linux distribution for enterprise firewalls and VPN routers into a line of Linux-powered firewall appliances. The Astaro Security Gateway family includes three models that support between 80 and 420 Mbps of firewalling throughput, and 26 to 270 Mbps of VPN throughput. (more…)

WPS heads for mobile Linux devices

Skyhook has introduced a wide-area positioning system based on WiFi radio signals, rather than satellite or cellular technology. The company says its WPS (WiFi Positioning System) is faster, works better indoors, and supports more existing devices. The company plans to support mobile clients running Linux. (more…)

GPL’d kernel module improves long-distance Internet communication

Japan's National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) has released a GPL-licensed Linux kernel module that can improve long-distance communications and media streaming quality over broadband Internet connections. PSPacer 1.0 suppresses traffic bursts to minimize packet loss, with a single PC able to smooth up to 100 connections. (more…)

Freescale demos UWB-enabled media server

Haier Corp. and Freescale Semiconductor jointly demonstrated a UWB (Ultra-Wideband) high definition (HD) television and digital media server, wirelessly broadcasting HD video and audio streams across a stage.
