New IrDA spec shoots for 100Mbit/s data rates

The Infrared Data Association (IrDA) has adopted a protocol that could support transfer rates of 100Mbit/s, or 25 times greater throughput than current infrared communications protocols. “IRSimple” offers improved data throughput on current IrDA hardware (with a software upgrade), and so far, has been demonstrated at 16Mbit/s on prototypical hardware, the IrDA says. GSPx 2005 conference adds wireless tutorials

The 2005 Global Signal Processing Expo (GSPx 2005) will feature three new wireless tutorials covering WiMAX, WiFi, and ZigBee/UWB. The event, Oct. 24-27 in Santa Clara, Calif., also features 18 workshops, 200 whitepapers, vendor exhibits, a “new products” forum, and keynotes from Freescale and Qualcomm executives, organizers say. Skype offers “mini Skype” API to application developers

Skype has opened up several APIs behind its popular peer-to-peer VoIP and instant-message (IM) software, in hopes of increasingly interoperability with other IM networks. The SkypeNet API allows software developers to embed “mini Skype” clients that provide presence and text messaging, while the SkypeWeb allows presence detection from Web applications. (more…)

PalmSource stock spikes on acquisition rumor
