Linux powers cordless videophone

Motorola acquires Linux-based IPTV STB vendor

uClinux cross-tools support C++ apps on Nios II soft-core CPU

Microtronix is shipping a uClinux cross-development toolkit for the Nios II soft-core processor that can be implemented in Altera FPGAs (field-programmable gate arrays). The Nios II Linux Development Kit lets developers write or port applications to the FPGA using standard Linux or Windows (Cygwin) hosts and standard development tools — including C++ tools. (more…)

Industry alliance promotes open telecom specifications

Six global network equipment providers (NEPs) have allied to promote open carrier grade base platforms. SCOPE, founded by Alcatel, Ericsson, Motorola, NEC, Nokia, and Siemens, will create subsets of existing standards, such as Carrier Grade Linux (CGL), with the aim of promoting open platforms among constituents' service provider customers, it says. Two billion unit device market tilts toward off-the-shelf software

More than two billion embedded devices shipped in 2004, according to Venture Development Corp., or about one device for every three people on the planet.
