Via boosts fanless Eden processors to 1.5 GHz

Via Technologies is shipping a family of x86 embedded processors boasting maximum TDP (thermal design power) of 7.5 Watts at 1.5 GHz, and idle power of 0.5 Watt. The new Eden processors are fabbed in 90 nm technology, and are built into 21×21 mm nanoBGA2 packages. (more…)

GUI test suite gains Tk, Tq support

Froglogic is preparing a version of its automated GUI (graphical user interface) test suite that supports GUIs written with Tk (toolkit). Squish/Tk also supports GUIs written in mixed Qt/Tk environments, the company says. Squish is a GUI testing tool aimed at EDA (electronic design automation) applications. (more…)

Java platform selected for 3G Linux phones

Aplix says its Java virtual machine (JVM) is a component of the first shipping mobile phones powered by Texas Instruments (TI) OMAP2420 applications processors, the 902i-series phones from NEC and Panasonic that work with NTT DoCoMo's 3G mobile network. (more…)

Trolltech renames, updates, expands Qt/Embedded

Trolltech has updated and renamed its graphics toolkit and development kit for embedded Linux devices. “Qtopia Core” is based on a Linux port of the company's Qt 4.0 development framework, and replaces its earlier Qt/Embedded product. (more…)

Opera launches web browser for consumer gadgets

Opera Software is shipping a version of its web browser aimed at TVs, set-top boxes, phones, and other consumer devices. Opera 8.5 for devices aims to provide an execution environment for web applications and user interfaces, in addition to the “full” Internet experience Opera has long claimed to offer on embedded devices. A development services company in Italy has released a dual-licensed, multi-platform HTTP/S server aimed at helping developers of small embedded devices create NUIs (network user interfaces) based on static or dynamic web pages. Mobile device maker tips Linux transition tactics

FAT fight far from finished

The USPTO (US Patent and Trade Office) decision to uphold Microsoft's patents on the FAT (file allocation table) filesystem will likely be challenged, writes Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols at Linux-Watch. NPU microcode adds PPP, TSEC, PowerQUICC-3

Arabella has enhanced its microcode implementation for Freescale's PowerPC-based NPUs (network processor units), adding support for PPP (point-to-point protocol) and the TSEC (three-speed Ethernet controller) in PowerQUICC-3 NPUs. [Updated Jan. 12] — Sharp used embedded Linux and Devicescape's WiFi stack to build a 32-inch flat-panel TV/PC display with a built-in 802.11a/b/g wireless media adapter. The IT-32X2 has a built-in HDTV tuner, and USB ports for viewing photos from digital cameras or USB storage devices. (more…)
