Malaysian startup licenses Linux phone stack

Startup a la Mobile reports that its Linux-based mobile phone stack has attracted its first licensee. Gupp Technologies, a Malaysian startup backed by global electronics vendor 3P Electronics, will use the Convergent Linux Platform in a dual-mode VoWiFi (voice-over-WiFi) and GSM smartphone expected next year, according to a la Mobile. One billion cellphones expected to ship this year

Despite a soft second quarter, both in terms of units and average selling prices, the mobile phone market is expected to achieve shipments of one billion units this year, according to ABI Research. Over 245 million mobile handsets shipped in Q3, and 4Q is expected to be a “bumper quarter,” the market research firm said. (more…)

Free thin client OS rev’d

An open source project maintaining a Linux-based operating system for thin clients has achieved a new release. Thinstation 2.2 runs on off-the-shelf thin clients or superannuated PCs, supports “all major connectivity protocols” and can be configured with a footprint as little as 6MB, a project spokesperson said. Red Hat aims its JEMS at telecom

Red Hat has joined OPUCE, a European telecommunications industry group chartered with building an “open service infrastructure.” The company hopes its JBoss Enterprise Middleware Suite (aka “JEMS”) will emerge as a core technology for the “service delivery platform” (SDP) being defined by OPUCE.
