AMD adds 32-, 64-bit embedded processors

AMD has introduced several new versions of its Geode LX processor, and has added a “low power” version of its 35-Watt dual-core Athlon 64 X2 to its embedded roadmap. Additionally, the company is offering three new reference designs, including an ATCA blade, a SOHO NAS server, and an “ultra-value client.” (more…)

Rugged, powerful WiFi cards support Linux

Ubiquiti Networks is shipping what are claimed to be the first-ever mini-PCI-based WiFi radios to boast 600mW transmit power, and the first to support operating temperatures from -45 to 95 degrees Celsius. (more…)

Slump in non-phone handheld shipments persists

Despite seasonal increases posted by several vendors during Q4, the market for non-phone handheld devices continued its downward trend throughout 2006, IDC reports. Only 5.5 million units shipped during 2006, 28.5 percent less than in 2005, while Q4 sank a whopping 35.9 percent from Q4-05, to 1.5 million units. (more…)

Vendors team up on HSDPA mobile phone design

Half-a-dozen Asian mobile phone vendors, carriers, and chipmakers will jointly develop an HSDPA-capable 2G/3.5G mobile phone hardware/software reference design. NTT DoCoMo, Renesas, Fujitsu, Mitsubishi Electric, Sharp, and Sony Ericsson say collaborating on a common, basic phone platform will help them invest more time and resources in developing distinctive handset features.
