GPLv3 arrives with little fanfare

The FSF (Free Software Foundation) today released GPLv3 (GNU General Public License version 3), the third generation of the world's most popular free software license. Mobile system-on-chip gains accelerated video

Freescale has reached volume production on a new SoC (system-on-chip) for video-enabled, drive-equipped devices based on Linux and other embedded OSes. Built on 90nm technology, the i.MX27 adds on-chip video acceleration, more storage interfaces, and a 10/100 Ethernet port to Freescale's popular i.MX21 mobile application processor, built on 130nm technology. Core 2 Duo alleged to have “non-fixable” bugs

Intel's Core 2 Duo processor has “serious, exploitable” bugs, claims Open BSD founder Theo de Raadt. Posting on a mailing list, de Raadt further charges that Intel leaves open source operating systems “in the cold” when it comes to providing fixes. (more…)

Open source HA middleware project takes off

Motorola announced this week that the open source high availability (HA) software project it launched four months ago has made considerable progress. The OpenSAF project has achieved an initial 1.0 code release, and Motorola has started the process of forming an “industry-wide consortium” to steward the project, according to the company. (more…)

What Eclipse “Europa” means for Linux device devs

Power.org gains embedded Linux vendor

Embedded Linux OS and tools provider MontaVista has joined Power.org. The company plans to help the independent, vendor-neutral industry group promote and maintain the PowerPC processor architecture, and said it hopes to “significantly contribute to global issues impacting open standard hardware development.” (more…)

LinuxWorld to feature device development

Eclipse “Europa” goes gold with 17 million lines of code

The Eclipse Foundation, which oversees the open-source Eclipse IDE (integrated development environment), today rolled out “Europa,” its latest annual “coordinated project release.” The huge release spans 21 projects and over 17 million lines of code, and weighs in at “more than double the size of last year's record-setting release,” the Foundation said. Multicore MIPS64 chips target Linux-based storage devices
