Android takes on medical diagnostics

A remote medical diagnostics application that integrates a Linux server and an application running on an Android cellphone is heading for a trial in the Philippines. The “Moca” software was developed by an open source project that grew out of an MIT Media Lab class. (more…)

Mobile WiFi router runs Linux

Novatel Wireless announced a mobile WiFi hotspot that is said to support EVDO 3G services and run Linux. Set to ship in the first half of 2009, the pocket-sized MiFi is billed as an “open platform capable of hosting advanced software applications.” (more…)

Cisco sued for Linksys GPL violation

The Software Freedom Law Center (SFLC) has filed another GPL lawsuit, and for the first time on behalf of the Free Software Foundation (FSF). The suit alleges that Cisco Systems violated the GNU General Public License (GPL) and Lesser GPL (LGPL) in several Linux-equipped Linksys devices. (more…)

Panel PCs claimed “waterproof”

Aaeon has announced three “waterproof” panel PCs that are equipped with touchscreen displays and Intel Celeron processors. The Fox-80, Fox-120, and Fox-150 panel PCs feature ports and surfaces that all meet the IP65 standard for water resistance, according to the company. (more…)

ARM11 module targets low-power devices

German embedded Linux house Denx and Italian turnkey-system vendor DAVE have co-developed a computer module and evaluation board aimed at low-power industrial applications. The Linux-ready “Qong” module, which is built into the “Qong EVB-Lite” evaluation board, uses a Freescale i.MX31 SoC (system on chip), says Denx. (more…)

The German company DSM Computer announced a fanless computer targeting “24 x 7” operation in harsh environmental conditions.
