High-end signage PC supplies four HDMI ports

Ibase Technology is shipping an “ultra-compact” signage computer with independent HDMI outputs supporting 1080p resolutions. The SI-28 Signature Book 2 runs either a dual- or quad-core AMD Athlon, and offers an ATI E4690 GPU, gigabit Ethernet, four USB ports, and wireless options, says the company. (more…)

Hypervisor spins virtual Android

Open Kernel Labs (OK Labs) is shipping an Android version of its Linux-compatible OKL4 hypervisor. “OK:Android” is an off-the-shelf, paravirtualized version of Android that enables Android to run as a guest operating system (OS) in a secure “hypercell” alongside another phone OS, says the company. Android invades more netbooks, smartphones, and — Moblin?

At this week's Computex show, Intel demonstrated Moblin running Android apps in a simulator. Meanwhile, Android phones were confirmed by Acer and Garmin-Asus, Acer announced an Android version of its Aspire One netbook (pictured), and Asus provided a brief glimpse of an Android netbook, reports say. Intel to buy Wind River for $884 million

[Updated: 9AM] — Intel announced it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Wind River Systems, one of the top providers of embedded Linux distributions and tools. Intel plans to acquire Wind River for $11.50 per share in cash, or about $884 million, making it a wholly owned subsidiary. (more…)

App stores to rule smartphone roost

Application stores and services will drive the smartphone market in the coming years, say reports from Ovum and In-Stat. According to Ovum, mobile apps will help make the Linux/Java-based Android the fastest growing smartphone OS by 2014, giving it an 18 percent share of a $406.7 million market. (more…)

Transflective netbook displays make Computex debut

Pixel Qi is showing off LCDs that work in both color and monochrome e-paper modes, and are claimed to require less than half the power of an ordinary display. Separately, E Ink, supplier of displays for Amazon's Kindle, says it has been acquired for $215 million by its primary supplier. (more…)

Faster SSDs target Linux netbooks

SanDisk has begun shipping a “next-generation” line of SSDs (solid state disks) for netbooks and ultra-thin notebooks, says eWEEK. Designed in collaboration with Ubuntu sponsor Canonical, the pSSD P2 and S2 have begun shipping along with netbook-geared 8GB and 16GB and SD cards, says the story. (more…)

More Linux distros tap Moblin for netbooks

[Updated: Jun. 3] — Canonical, Xandros, Linpus, and Red Flag announced versions of their Linux distributions based on the open source Moblin v2 stack for Intel Atom-based netbooks. The LiMo Foundation announced the completion of its second-generation R2 specification for its LiMo (Linux Mobile) Platform. Android port to MIPS completed

Embedded Alley (EA) announced it is has completed its port of the Linux/Java-based Android platform to the MIPS architecture. The Embedded Alley Development System for Android-based Devices initially targets devices ranging from set-top boxes (STBs) to industrial equipment running the MIPS-based RMI Au1250 processor. Media playback technology targets Linux netbooks

RealNetworks has extended the Moblin version of its RealPlayer streaming media player to support a variety of netbook-oriented processors and Linux distributions.
