Linux Mobile group readies 2Q push

The LiMo Foundation will soon announce more handsets, said executive director Morgan Gillis, in an interview with LinuxDevices. Gillis, who sounded off on Intel's Wind River acquisition, Android, Chrome OS, Symbian, and more, said the mid-August announcement will be followed by bigger announcements in October as LiMo R2 reaches market. Fanless PC has six serial ports, eight GPIOs

Ibase Technology has announced a fanless computer that sports six serial ports and eight GPIOs. The ASB200-883-6COM includes a 2.5-inch bay for an HDD (hard disk drive), externally accessible CompactFlash slot, dual gigabit Ethernet ports, and both VGA and DVI video outputs, the company says. HTC now says 2009 revenue will fall

The smartphone market might not be as “recession proof” as observers had been expecting. HTC did an about-face today on its financial predictions for 2009, saying that its revenue will fall, according to reports by the Dow Jones, Reuters, and IDG news services. (more…)

22-inch touchscreen PCs offer choice of CPUs

Avalue has announced a pair of panel PCs sporting 22-inch displays and resistive touchscreens. The PPC-22W01 and PPC-22W03 include 2.5-inch hard disk drives, CompactFlash and Mini PCI slots, and dual gigabit Ethernet ports, the company says. (more…)

50 million WiMAX users by 2014, says study

Juniper Research released a study predicting 50 million WiMAX broadband subscribers around the world by 2014. Much of the growth will be driven by the original goal for the wireless technology: providing broadband to underserved areas that pose logistical challenges to wired broadband networks, says the research firm. Hardware-assisted debugger adds Atom support

Lauterbach announced that its Linux-ready, hardware-assisted debugger now supports the Intel Atom CPU. Lauterbach's Trace32 PowerTools now support the various versions of the Intel Atom, and will support Intel's related, MID-oriented Moorestown and Medfield smartphone processor when they ship in 2010, says the German embedded firm. Portwell has added to its collection of Mini-ITX embedded boards with a model supporting Intel Core 2 Duo or Core 2 Quad processors. The WADE-8180 includes VGA and DVI-D video outputs, has four SATA ports compatible with RAID levels 0, 1, 5, and 10, and has a PCI Express x 16 expansion slot. (more…)

CompactPCI board supports new PlusIO standard

MEN Micro announced a Linux-compatible CompactPCI SBC that it says is the first to follow the forthcoming PICMG 2.30 PlusIO standard. The F19P uses an Intel Core 2 Duo SP9300 processor, offers up to 8GB of DDR2 RAM, features multiple PCI Express links, and has five SATA ports with RAID support, the company says. (more…)

Acquisition of Linux/Android specialists to bring Android to PowerPC

Mentor Graphics announced it has acquired Linux development firm Embedded Alley, plans to port Android to PowerPC, and will work with ARM, Freescale, Marvell, MIPS, RMI, and TI on Linux and/or Android projects. One plan calls for combining Linux with Mentor's “Nucleus” RTOS on Marvell's dual-core Sheeva MV78200 processors, added Mentor. (more…)

Creative Technology subsidiary ZiiLabs is shipping a developer-focused portable media player based on a homegrown, dual ARM-core “ZMS-05” SoC and “Plaszma” Linux distribution. The Zii Egg StemCell Computer offers a 3.5-inch display supporting 1080p HD video, plus an HD video camera, WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth, an SDK, and optional Android, says ZiiLabs. (more…)

Low-power ARM9 SoC gains Linux support

Timesys released a version of its LinuxLink development framework for a Texas Instruments (TI) ARM9 SoC that targets low-power devices, ranging from medical instrumentation to industrial control systems. The OMAP-L137 subscription represents the first LinuxLink release for an OMAP-L1xx SoC, which are designed to incorporate TI's new C674x DSPs, says the company. (more…)

Simulation platform adds full-system checkpointing

Virtutech announced that its Linux-compatible Simics virtualized systems development (VSD) simulation platform now supports full-system checkpointing for SystemC-based transaction-level modeling (TLM). Tech firms partner on 32/28nm SoC designs

Synopsys has joined a partnership that includes ARM, as well as “Common Platform” members IBM, Chartered, and Samsung, to reduce the cost of SoCs fabricated using 32- or 28-nanometer technology. The group is showing off early results from test chips at the Design Automation Conference (DAC) show this week in San Francisco, according to eWEEK. (more…)
