Next-gen Atoms to launch Jan. 3?

Intel will launch its new generation of Atom processors, code-named “Pineview,” on Jan. 3, according to reports by the Fudzilla website. The CPUs — known as the Atom N450, D410, and D510 — will extend netbook battery life and may allow HD video playback, among other previously cited advantages.

PC/104+ module uses one-Watt SoC

Aaeon has announced a PC/104+ CPU module with a DMP Electronics Vortex86SX processor and 256MB of DDR2 memory. Targeting military, terminal, and transportation markets, the “PFM-535S” has dual Ethernet ports, four USB ports, and an onboard CompactFlash socket, the company says.

ARM9 microcontroller gains Linux development support

Timesys announced that it is providing the first commercial Linux development support for NXP Semiconductors' LPC313x series of ARM9-based microcontrollers. The “LinuxLink for LPC313x” offering enables developers to build custom Linux-based products on the 180MHz ARM926EJ-S-based processor, says the company.

Industrial computer boasts fault resilient booting

Taiwan-based Artila Electronics announced a Linux-ready, ARM9-based box computer that runs on only three Watts of power and offers “fault resilient” booting from 2MB of data flash. The fanless Matrix-504 incorporates a 400MHz Atmel AT91SAM9G20 processor, and offers Ethernet, serial, and USB connectivity, says the company.

WiFi goes peer-to-peer

The WiFi Alliance says it is working on a specification that will allow devices to connect to one another directly, without the assistance of a router. “WiFi Direct” will be published “upon completion” and certification of devices will begin in 2010, the organization says.

Linux-based robot sub wins top award

Cornell University undergraduates have developed an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) that runs Debian Linux on a 2.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. The 50-inch mini-sub won first place in the 12th annual Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Competition, and was the first AUV to complete the entire course since 2002.

Dell’s Android phone confirmed

Dell has confirmed that its Android phone will launch in the U.S. next year, says eWEEK. In other Android news, Samsung is prepping a “Galaxy Lite i5700” for Europe, a music-oriented phone is coming from INQ, Spotify, and Telia, and Verizon is spinning a MiFi-enabled phone, say various reports.

Android phone taps Snapdragon SoC

Acer announced its first Android smartphone, which will also be the first Android phone based on Qualcomm's Snapdragon processor. The Acer Liquid offers a WVGA touchscreen, HSPA 3G support, plus Android 1.6, and reportedly also provides WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth, and a five megapixel camera.

First Atom-powered Android netbook debuts

Acer and Amazon announced pre-sales for the first Android-powered netbook running on an Intel Atom. Acer's Aspire One AOD250-1613 netbook offers a 10.1-inch display, gesture-enabled touchpad, and a dual-boot system in which Android handles 18-second boot-ups, enabling users to seamlessly switch between Android and Windows, says the company.

Rugged automation box PC supports Core Duo

Kontron announced a fanless, Mini-ITX-based box PC that supports Intel Celeron or Core Duo CPUs and consumes 37 Watts. The Kontron Concept Box 751 offers three gigabit Ethernet ports, six USB 2.0 ports, four serial ports, a 2.5-inch HDD bay, and an IEEE1394 Firewire port, says the company.

World’s smallest Linux networking server?

Lantronix announced its latest XPort embedded networking module, which it touts as the “world's smallest Linux networking server.” The XPort Pro measures 1.33 x 0.64 x 0.53 inches, and offers 8MB of SDRAM, 16MB of flash, RJ45 Ethernet and serial ports, a web server, SSH and SSL security, and IPv6 support.

Study: Netbook sales growing at 264 percent clip

A DisplaySearch study shows netbook sales continuing to defy the recession and the slow PC market, growing at a 264 percent rate in the second quarter year over year, says eWEEK. However, netbooks are also eroding ASPs (average selling prices) across the mobile PC industry, claims the study.

Techsol touch panel ships, marking 10 years of embedded ARM devices

Techsol is shipping a Linux-ready “TPC-43B” 4.3-inch touch-panel PC equipped with its ARM-based Medallion CPU Module and Power-over-Ethernet support, and targeting building automation and factory HMI applications. Meanwhile, Techsol announced its tenth year of designing low-power computers based on a variety of low-power ARM-based embedded computers.

Qt port to Maemo targets Nokia N900

Nokia has ported its cross-platform Qt development framework to the Linux-based Maemo 5 mobile device distribution. The Qt for Maemo preview release enables developers to port Qt applications to the Maemo-based Nokia N900 phone or write N900 apps with Qt and port them to Maemo 6, Symbian, or Windows Mobile.

Ibase has announced an ATX format motherboard that supports up to an Intel Core 2 Quad with 1333MHz Front Side Bus (FSB). The MB945 mobo offers an Intel Q45 Express chipset, up to 16GB DDR3 memory, gigabit Ethernet, a dozen USB ports, PCI/PCIe expansion, and six SATA II interfaces.
