Axiomtek announced two 12.1-inch panel PCs with a resistive touchscreen and a choice of Intel Atom processors. The GOT-3126TL-830 and GOT-3126T-823 have a resolution of 800 x 600 pixels, a 2.5-inch SATA drive bay, multiple serial ports, plus CompactFlash and PCI Express Mini Card slots, the company says.
T-Mobile USA introduced its Samsung Galaxy S 4G, an Android 2.2-based smartphone the carrier says will offer peak download speeds of 21Mbps. While few other details were provided, the device will likely feature a 4.3-inch AMOLED (active matrix organic LED) screen and dual cameras, as do others in the Galaxy S line.
Announcing financial results, AMD said its yearly profits and revenues for 2010 were both better than those from the year before. While the chipmaker may be giving more attention to the trendy tablet space, it will continue to focus on current plans, particularly with its Fusion initiative, according to interim CEO Thomas Seifert.

The VBOX-3200 offers features including a 1.6GHz dual-core or 1.2GHz single-core CPU, up to 8GB DDR3 memory, dual 2.5-inch drive bays, power protection, and a CAN bus, says the company.

Adlink announced a credit-card-size COM (computer on module) that complies with the new nanoETXexpress specification, allowing it to support multiple displays. The nanoX-TC includes 512MB, 1GB, or 2GB of soldered-on memory, Intel Atom E6xx processors, and an optional SSD (solid-state disk) from 1GB to 16GB in size, according to the company.
Semiconductor vendor Tilera Corp. has received a new round of $45 million in funding from investors including Cisco and Samsung, intended to further development of its massively multicore “Tile” family of system-on-chips (SoCs). Tilera will use the money in part to launch a new line of 225-core “Stratton” SoCs, due in 2013.
Israeli computer firm CompuLab announced the first embedded industrial computer based on dual-core AMD G-series processors — either the 1.6GHz T56N or the 1GHz T48N. Measuring 6.3 x 6.3 x 0.98 inches, the fanless fit-PC3 offers 4GB of DDR3 memory, SATA 3 storage, an HDMI output, a Mini PCI Express slot, and a new “custom” expansion slot, according to the company.
Samsung has denied rumors that it wants to charge carriers for Android updates, forcing T-Mobile to withhold updates to the Samsung Vibrant. Whatever the case, the Vibrant kerfluffle is one more example of a slow Android update process that is confusing the market, say observers.
Canonical founder Mark Shuttleworth announced that the next version of Ubuntu Linux will adopt Nokia's Qt cross-platform development framework. The nanoETXexpress Industrial Group has published its “nanoETXexpress 2.0” specification for credit-card-sized COMs (computer on modules). The revision adds a Type 10 pinout compatible with multiple digital displays, a PCI Express Gen 2 expansion bus, and dedicated pins for serial interfaces or CAN bus, according to Kontron.
The British government and “UK Digital Champion” Martha Lane Fox have launched a pilot scheme to help citizens who do not have access to the Internet buy their own refurbished Linux-based PC for 98 Pounds (about $156). Run by a firm called Remploy, the trial is part of the government's Race Online 2012 program to get all U.K. citizens online.
IBM and ARM are extending their partnership to include work on 14-nanometer processors for mobile devices. The partnership is specifically aimed at developing smaller, more energy-efficient chips for smartphones and tablet PCs, the companies say.
Australian company Evolve III announced an Intel Atom-powered tablet that can be booted into Windows 7, Android, or the MeeGo version of Linux. The “Maestro” offers a capacitive multitouch screen, 2GB of DDR3 RAM, 32GB or 64GB of SSD (solid state disk) storage, and an Intel Atom N475 processor that may later be replaced by the Z670 (“Oak Trail”), according to the company.
Acer is expected to release two to three Android-based tablets running Intel's “Sandy Bridge” Core processors, and will start to back out of the netbook business, says an industry report. At CES, Acer announced ARM Cortex-A9 based Iconia Tab A500 Android tablet for Verizon's 4G LTE network.
