German board-maker Lippert is offering a limited number of single-board computers (SBCs) to students and researchers it judges as doing innovative work on advanced outdoor technology projects. The boards are based on 200MHz to 2.0GHz x86 processors and are implemented in a variety of embedded form-factors.

The available Lippert embedded SBCs come in these board formats: PC/104, PC/104-Plus, PCI-104, and Mini-ITX. Sizes vary from 3.5 x 3.6 inches to 6.7 x 6.7 inches.

Only outdoor projects requiring a certain level of ruggedness are acceptable, Lippert said. The project must be a student research project certified by a university, and it must be completed within 12 months.

Students working on an appropriate research project or a diploma thesis may send a project description to Lippert and ask for a specific embedded PC module. If the project qualifies, the student gets the module free of charge, according to the company.
