Commercial open source RTOS gains CAN bus support

eCosCentric has added CAN (controller area network) bus capabilities to its commercially supported open source RTOS (real-time operating system) for deeply embedded systems. eCosPro-CAN initially supports ARM and PowerPC chips from Philips and Freescale, and targets automotive and industrial control systems.

eCosPro-CAN includes an API for accessing devices attached to a CAN network, with support for hardware filtering, and baud rates from 10Kbits/sec to 10Mbits/sec, eCosCentric says. It also includes drivers for CAN controllers that include:

  • Philips SJA1000 CAN controller chip
  • On-chip controllers in Philips's LPC2000 family of ARM7-based SoCs
  • FlexCAN controllers in Freescale ColdFire and PowerPC processors

eCosCentric CEO Alex Schuilenburg stated, “The widespread use of CAN bus in industrial control and modern vehicles has created a demand for CAN support.”
