Crypto suite supports Linux-based devices

Mar 7, 2005 — by Henry Kingman — from the LinuxDevices Archive — views

Cryptography specialist Certicom has launched a security software suite aimed at helping device makers create secure, Web-based user interfaces based on elliptic curve cryptography. The Certicom Security Architecture (CSA) for Embedded supports Linux, and includes SSL, IPSec, PKI, DRM, and Embedded Trust Services.

Certicom is strong advocate of elliptic curve cryptography, which it says represents the next generation of public key cryptography.

According to Certicom, CSA for Embedded offers comprehensive security functions from basic cryptography to legacy protocols such as RSA to the latest industry standards. A modular architecture combined with hardware support packages provide portability across a wide range of chipsets and applications.

The Certicom Security Architecture for Embedded includes a key management, storage, and authentication agent called Security Builder ETS. It also includes Security Builder HSP, a hardware support package that provides an abstraction layer for trusted platform modules and hardware accelerated cryptography.

Certicom says it worked with Freescale Semiconductor on integrating support for the PowerQUICC family of network processors. CSA Embedded also supports Intel Wireless Trusted Platform. Certicom is working with other vendors to add support for additional microprocessors, modules, and smart cards.

Jim Alfred, director of product management at Certicom, said, “Adding security to devices can be a daunting job for developers, especially if they lack expertise in cryptography and key management.”
