e-Seminar includes key embedded Linux market data

May 5, 2005 — by Henry Kingman — from the LinuxDevices Archive — views

VDC's Chris Lanfear generously shared key market research findings with participants in LinuxDevices.com's e-Seminar on embedded Linux yesterday. The e-Seminar also included presentations from the ELC's Murry Shohat, and the OSDL's Bill Weinberg. An archived version is available online now.

Ziff-Davis e-Seminars aim to bring you the experience of a tradeshow keynote, from the comfort of your RealPlayer plug-in-equipped, Javascript-enabled browser. You'll hear high-quality streaming audio, synchronized with rotating slides in a large browser window. Small pop-up windows present single-question polls between presentations. It's slick, and fun, and the material presented is lively and engaging.

Lanfear's presentation on the current penetration of Linux in the embedded market is definitely worth the few minutes it may take you to install the RealPlayer plugin. VDC's data validates several of the trends we reported yesterday in our analysis of annual reader survey data from 2005, and it probably comes from a less Linux-biased sample group.

Lanfear generously shared data on:

  • Target embedded OS developers are using (slide)
  • Factors influencing embedded OS selection (slide)
  • Inhibitors to Linux adoption (slide)
  • Intellectual property concerns (slide)
  • Past and projected monetary valuation of Linux OS, tools, and add-ons market (slide)
  • Valuation of embedded Linux market in Americas, EMEA, and Asia/Pacific (slide)
  • Embedded Linux use by vertical market application (slide)
  • Marketshare of commercial embedded Linux providers (slide)
  • Factors influencing embedded OS vendor selection (slide)

The e-Seminar also includes a presentation from the ELC's Murry Shohat that focuses on currently available products based on embedded Linux, as well as a talk on “Device OEMs: Why They Look to Linux,” from the OSDL's Bill Weinberg.

The archived e-Seminar is available here (tested on Debian Sid, SuSE 9.3, and Red Hat 9). Discussion of the event can be found here, in our reader forum. A complete set of slides from the presentation is available for download as a PDF, here (local mirror).
