Eclipse Foundation highlights successes since non-profit move

Oct 6, 2004 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — views

The Eclipse Foundation says it has gained momentum since re-incorporating as a non-profit organization six months ago. Membership has increased 30 percent, while nine new open source Eclipse-based projects have sprung up. In all, 18 commercial products are now based on the Eclipse platform for cross-vendor tools integration, it says.

The Eclipse Foundation re-incorporated as a non-profit in early February, in a move widely interpreted as an effort to distance itself from project originator IBM and build industry confidence in tool platform's vendor-neutrality. Apparently, the strategy has succeeded.

New Eclipse members during the last six months include:

  • Actuate Corporation
  • Acucorp Inc.
  • Agitar Software
  • Aonix
  • Compuware Corporation
  • Communications and Media Arts (CMA)
  • Eclipse PlugIn Central (EPIC)
  • JBoss Inc.
  • Kinzan Inc.
  • M1 Global Solution
  • Mentor Graphics
  • Panscopic
  • PureEdge Solutions, Inc.
  • Real-Time Innovations, Inc.
  • Social Physics
  • Softlanding Systems Inc.
  • The Thales Group

In total, Eclipse now has six top-level open source projects that are made up of 34 subprojects, the Foundation reports. Projects new in the last six months include:

    • Eclipse Communications Project
    • Embedded Rich Client Platform (eRCP)
    • Pollinate
    • Open Modeling Environment with Links for Extensions and Transformations (OMELET)
    • Voice Tools Project

Finally, according to the Eclipse Foundation, commercial products based on the Eclipse Platform and IDE now number 18, including:

  • Exadel Struts Studio and JSF Studio
  • Genuitec MyEclipse
  • IBM WebSphere Studio
