Fast-booting Linux boards gain secondary bootloader

Dec 4, 2006 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — views

Technologic reports that its fast-booting ARM-based SBCs (single-board computers) are now available with a Linux-based bootloader capable of launching an alternate kernel or executive. The bootloader is said to obviate the need for direct flash programming, using U-Boot, Redboot, or another bootloader, among other touted advantages.

Technologic's Linux-based bootloader supports its TS-7300 (pictured at right) and TS-7400 SBCs, respectively, both of which are based on low-power ARM9 processors. It also supports the “WiFiBox,” pictured above, which contains the TS-7400.

Both the TS-7300 and TS-7400 come with a Linux implementation that boots in less than two seconds, using XIP (execute-in-place) and other techniques. Both target industrial control and remote sensing applications, where systems may be required to awaken at intervals, read a sensor, and fall back to sleep.

The new Linux bootloaders enables Technologic's fast-booting systems to be programmed using shell scripts to to launch a second kernel or another arbitrary binary, the compamy says. The bootloader comprises a loadable kernel module and a user-space application.

The bootloader could also enable companies to update their embedded systems in the field, according to Technologic. Additional details can be found on the company's website, here.

Availability

The TS-7300, TS-7400, and WiFiBox are available now, as is the Linux-based bootloader.
