Registration is open for the fourth annual Flash Memory Summit, scheduled from August 11-13 at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, Calif. The conference will cover flash memory topics including laptop design, green flash, mobile applications, new non-volatile memory technologies, and solid-state drives (SSDs), say the organizers.

According to organizers Conference ConCepts, The Flash Memory Summit is intended for anyone involved or interested in the design, manufacturing, marketing, sales, or use of flash memory in consumer devices, computers, communications devices, and industrial, military, and defense equipment.

The Summit will help flash memory engineers and executives decide what new products can be created with flash memory, learn how they can designed efficiently, and keep track of the rapid changes in the market, say the organizers.

The conference will include eight keynotes, an exhibition hall, and numerous sessions and presentations. The Summit is also said to feature a half-day tutorial on "SSD Basics" and full-day tutorials on "Flash in Embedded" and "Enterprise Storage Systems." Keynote speakers for Flash Memory Summit 2009 include:

• Michael Cornwall, head of NAND Business Development, Sun Microsystems
• Ed Doller, CTO and corporate VP, Numonyx
• Michael Hajeck, SVP and GM, Solid State Storage Business Unit, Western Digital (WD)
• Eli Harari, Chairman and CEO, SanDisk

• Jim Elliott, VP, Memory Marketing, Samsung Semiconductor
• Brian Shirley, VP, Memory, Micron

Flash-related vendors represented at the Summit, aside from those listed in the keynote list above, include IBM, Seagate, Spansion, Smart Modular, Xiotech, Datalight, STEC, Lexar, Hitachi, ARM, and Fusion-IO. Flash customers discussing how they are using flash in their products will include representatives from Dell, EMC, HP, IBM, NetApp, and Sun, says Conference ConCepts.

Specific topics set to be covered at the Summit include:

• Developing flash-based products
• Using SSDs in computers and storage systems
• Using flash in embedded and mobile applications
• Handling flash and SSD security
• Recognizing new technologies that may replace flash
• Determining where flash markets are heading
• Using flash memory in embedded systems
• Working with flash memory based architectures
• Using flash in enterprise storage systems
• Developing SSDs
• Flash design methods
• New approaches to nonvolatile memory subsystems

Smaller group sessions will cover subjects such as embedded applications, flash software, consumer applications, security, computer applications, and standards, say the organizers. The Summit will also host special sessions including Green Flash, Year in Review, Life Beyond Flash, and Top Ten Things You Need to Know about Flash Memory Today.

The fourth annual Flash Memory Summit Awards will be announced at the Summit, recognizing the most innovative flash products and solutions over the last year. Awards will be announced in four categories:

• Most innovative flash memory application
• Most innovative flash memory technology
• Most innovative flash memory implementation
• Most innovative flash memory end user solution
