Hey, here's one from the “just for fun” department . . .

San Diego, CA — (press release excerpt) — MusicMatch today announced availability of a free beta version of its music juke box program for Linux. “MusicMatch Jukebox” allows music files to be played, recorded, organized, and discovered on Linux systems. Music formats supported include CDs, MP3s, and WAV files. MusicMatch Jukebox for Linux is available for free download by Beta testers at www.musicmatch.com (registration required).

Dennis Mudd, president and CEO of MusicMatch, Inc., said: “Until now, the Linux community has had very few options for experiencing the freedom of digital music and we've worked hard to bring our award-winning jukebox to the Linux platform for the first time,”

Offering a prize for Beta feedback

Linux version Beta testers who provide feedback on the new version will automatically be entered to win a $500 digital media kit, including a CD-RW drive, a selection of music CDs and a free lifetime upgrade to MusicMatch Jukebox for Linux Plus.

They made it with WINE

To create MusicMatch Jukebox for Linux, MusicMatch and CodeWeavers utilized WINE software, which enables Windows software to efficiently cross platforms and create a powerful software product with enhanced core functionality. With WINE, MusicMatch was able to significantly reduce the amount of development time needed to deliver the full power of MusicMatch Jukebox to the Linux community. And, WINE makes it easier for the Linux and Windows versions of MusicMatch Jukebox to evolve in sync.

MusicMatch and CodeWeavers also made a number of significant contributions to the WINE open-source code for other developers to take advantage of, including improved CD management, browser functionality, windows management, undecorated windows and MCI components.

“MusicMatch Jukebox for Linux satisfies an intense demand for all-in-one jukebox software for the Linux platform,” said Jeremy White, founder and president of CodeWeavers. “We're proud to have had the opportunity to work with MusicMatch on the development of its Jukebox for Linux, and our contributions to the WINE open-source code will undoubtedly benefit others in the future.”
