Gartner/DataQuest and EE Times Asia have collaborated on a survey which has found embedded Linux to now be the most commonly used operating system among Asian embedded developers. The finding comes from a detailed study surveying over 800 embedded software developers in Asia.

The study, conducted in October 2003, separates responses into China, Taiwan, South Korea, and “Rest of Asia” (ROA) groups. Embedded Linux was the number one OS among current projects in all four groups, and the number one choice for future projects as well in all four groups.

Linux was strongest in Taiwan, claiming 50 percent of RTOS usage for 2003 projects and 63 percent of projected 2004 projects.

The detailed survey report presents a great deal of interesting data about the embedded market in Asia, and may be of special relevance to those interested in consumer electronics, where Asia is a world leader.
