Hardware-assisted debug tools add Freescale processors

Macraigor Systems has added support for Freescale's i.MX31 and i.MX31L to its line of hardware assisted debuggers. Additionally, it has added sample configurations for Freescale evaluation boards to its collection of free, pre-built GNU toolchains, and pledged to support forthcoming boards.

The i.MX31 and i.MX32L began shipping in early July, and are Freescale's newest mobile multimedia chips. They feature ARM-1136JF-S cores clocked from 532MHz to 665MHz, along with on-chip peripheral interfaces targeting mobile devices. For example, both chips have on-chip display/TV controllers and IPUs (image processing units) that FreeScale claims can deliver video at 30fps while minimizing CPU involvement. The i.MX31 (non “L” version) adds 2D/3D graphics acceleration supporting OpenGL, and a VPU (vector floating point unit). Freescale says its i.MX products support Linux, Windows CE, Palm OS, and Symbian OS.”

Macraigor says all its debugging software will support the i.MX32(L) chips, when used with its OCDemon family of hardware probes and emulators. The company offers hardware debug devices with parallel, serial, USB, and Ethernet connectivity, with support for both Linux and Windows hosts.

Additionally, Macraigor has added sample configurations for Freescale evaluation boards to its collection of free GNU toolchains. The sample configurations include source, gdbinit, and make files for each board, allowing developers to build, download, and debug via gdb using only two commands, the company claims. Similar configurations will be added for future i.MX31-based boards, the company says.

Freescale's director of third-party business development, Monica Hamilton, said, “Macraigor's OCDemon family of products offers an extensive feature set for embedded, low-power applications. Developers building thin clients, single-board computers, routers, and set-top boxes now have robust debug capabilities geared for i.MX31 performance applications.”

Macraigor last month added support for AMD Geode NX chips.
