[Updated June 6, 2002] Hitachi has just released a new model of its Linux-based FLORA-ie wireless web pad. The device was initially launched in November 2000.

The FLORA-ie 55mi contains the equivalent functions of a notebook computer, including a Transmeta Crusoe processor with 128 to 256 megabytes of system RAM and a 10.4-inch TFT color LCD screen. It operates in both a desktop and roaming mode. When it's inserted in its docking station, you can use it with an external keyboard and mouse, and connection to the Internet is via its built-in 10/100 Mbit/sec Ethernet port. Remove it from the docking station, and the built-in 802.11b wireless LAN port takes over for its Internet connection, and you enter data and control commands using the touchscreen and a stylus in combination with some pushbuttons.

The FLORA-ie's internal operating system is Midori Linux, a form of Linux for web pads and other mobile devices developed by Transmeta, maker of the FLORA's Crusoe processor and employer of Linux-creator Linus Torvalds.
