IBM Stops Production of Windows CE Device

IBM has “quietly stopped producing its z50 keyboard-based device, a spokesman confirmed. The so-called Jupiter-class device, which was released last May, was similar to, but somewhat smaller than, a small laptop computer and cost less than $1,000. It was the only Windows CE device the company produced.”

” . . . IBM is not the first to drop Windows CE, which has garnered miniscule market share compared to devices based on the Palm OS. Philips and Everex previously stopped producing Windows CE devices. Like IBM, Philips took a diplomatic approach to dropping the operating system, but Everex executives complained that users rejected Windows CE because it was too clumsy.”

“A re-designed version of Windows CE, now dubbed Pocket PC, is scheduled for release in April. Microsoft, which has acknowledged Windows CE was not as user-friendly as it could have been, claims the new Pocket PC rectifies many of those shortcomings.”
