“Industrial grade” embedded Linux distro adds features

Sysgo has updated its commercial Linux distribution that targets “industrial embedded” applications. ELinOS v4.1 offers broad hardware and software component support, and now comes standard with Eclipse-based development and testing tools, making it the first “Industrial Grade Linux” distribution,… according to Sysgo.

Starting with v4.1, Sysgo now bundles its “CoTools” with the standard ELinOS product, it says. CoTools include the Eclipse-based Codeo IDE (integrated development tool) and Cognito embedded target analyzer tool. The CoTools can be used to analyze application timing behavior, resource information, memory utilization, IRQ behavior, process tree structures, and available sockets, among other characteristcs, the company says.

ELinOS is said to support a variety of specialized industrial interfaces and buses — such as CAN, CANOpen, VME, and EtherCAT — in addition to capabilities such as IPv4/IPv6, OpenVPN, USB 2.0, and WiFi. Supported real-time add-ons include the open source Xenomai extensions, as well as Sysgo's POSIX-compliant hard real-time PikeO product.

Sysgo says ELinOS v4.1 includes 2.6.15 and 2.4.31 kernels that have been tested and validated on supported platforms, which are said to comprise “nearly all” the embedded boards from partners Kontron, MEN, AMCC, Digital-Logic, Freescale, Motorola, Phytec, AMD, Intel, and IBM. Supported architectures include PowerPC, x86, MIPS, ARM, and XScale.

New BSPs in ELinOS 4.1 include:

  • Freescale Lite5200B
  • MEN PowerQuicc III boards EM3 and EM8
  • AMD LX 800
  • Digital-Logic MSM800SEV and MPCV800
  • Motorola MVME 3100
  • AMCC 405 Taihu
  • Atmel AT91RM9200
  • Teco Tempo 02 and MP-10, MP-11, MP-12 modules
  • BSPs for virtualization engines
    • PikeOS (X86, PPC, MIPS)
    • QEMU (x86, PPC, ARM)
    • VMware (X86)

As with earlier versions, ELinOS 4.1 comes with a graphical configuration tool called ELK (embedded Linux konfigurator) aimed at helping developers implement minimalistic embedded filesystems.

CEO Knut Degen stated, “With ELinOS RealTime coming up in September and the recently released ELinOS v4.1 Industrial Grade Linux, we complete our offer for the demands of the growing embedded Linux market.”

Availability

ELinOS v4.1 Industrial Grade Linux is available now. Pricing was not disclosed. A commandline-only “FreeToolbox” version can be freely downloaded, with registration.
