Linux cookbook deemed “tasty” by reviewer

Dec 19, 2007 — by Eric Brown — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 2 views

Carla Schroder's Linux Networking Cookbook received a hearty endorsement over at Linux-Watch this week. Published by O'Reilly, Schroder's follow-up to her Linux Cookbook is intended for networking administrators in home-, small-, and medium businesses, but… could also help embedded Linux developers configuring test and other networks.

The Linux Networking Cookbook offers 17 recipes for typical Linux networking jobs, writes reviewer Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols, who put three of the recipes to the test. Vaughan-Nichols was “impressed” with the results, especially in the way Schroder explained “one of the greatest pains ever faced by a Windows/Linux network administrators — getting Linux systems to work with Active Directory.”

The reviewer praises Schroder's ability to write in a “very straightforward and clear manner.” For example, “when things get complicated,” he writes, “she sticks to the main thread” instead of overloading the reader with details.

The book addresses a much-needed middle ground between an introduction and an expert guide, says Vaughan-Nichols. (For beginners, he recommends Craig Hunt's TCP/IP Network Administration, Third Edition.) The reviewer concludes that Linux Networking Cookbook “is one of the best practical guides I have ever had the pleasure of reading on making real-world answers to Linux networking requirements.”
