Low-cost MIPS SBC includes embedded Linux

Beta Comptronics Inc. of Nagpur, India is shipping a compact, low-cost SBC (single-board computer) based on a 150MHz MIPS processor. The $180 SBC sports Ethernet, USB, and serial ports, and comes bundled with an embedded Linux software development kit based on the 2.4 Linux kernel.

Key features and functions of the MIPS SBC, according to the company, are:

  • CPU — 150 MHz MIPS processor
  • Memory:
    • 8 MB RAM (3 MB available for user applications)
    • 2 MB Flash (1 MB available for user applications)
  • Input/output ports:
    • 10/100 Mbps Ethernet port
    • One USB port, supported by RDINS driver
    • One serial port included (can be used as console port)
    • Optional second serial port
  • 6 status LEDs, under application control
  • Built-in power supply, requires 9V AC input


The SBC's Linux support software CD includes:

  • Linux kernel 2.4
  • Flash File System
  • BusyBox
  • Telnet server and Telnet client
  • FTP server and client
  • Web server with CGI support
  • DHCP server
  • Complete source code with cross compiler

Extra-cost expansion cards are available for the following functions:

  • 16-channel digital I/O
  • 8-channel analog-to-digital converter
  • Real-time clock

The MIPS SBC is priced at $180 (US), according to the company. A 9V AC adapter and an ethernet cable are included.
