LynuxWorks aims major US disti deal at mil/aero sectors

LynuxWorks has signed up Arrow OEM Computing Solutions as its exclusive distributor for North America, the companies announced this week. The partnership aims to market LynuxWorks's BlueCat embedded Linux and LynxOS real-time operating systems (RTOSes) and related development tools to US government contractors, primarily in the defense and aerospace sectors.

LynuxWorks has long aimed its embedded software at US government applications, creating its first product in the late 1980s for the NASA-funded space station program. The company said last April that a large US defense design win will enable it to double revenue and increase staffing 30 percent within a year. The company's LynxOS-178 RTOS has been selected for use in the Future Combat Systems (FCS) Integrated Computer System (ICS), largely due to Linux binary compatibility, it said.

LynuxWorks's embedded RTOSes conform to POSIX, a spec that is increasingly mandated for commercial applications and government contracts, especially for safety and mission-critical systems. The company is ISO 9001:2000 certified, and has established FAA DO-178B Level “A” processes for safety critical software, a requirement for most aviation applications. Additionally, LynuxWorks says its proprietary “Linux-like” LynxOS RTOS can run unmodified Linux and VxWorks applications through binary compatibility layers, and that LynxOS became DO178B certifiable in March of 2003.

Arrow OEM Computing Solutions is the division of Arrow Electronics Inc. that provides design engineering, manufacturing, system integration, supply chain management, and post-manufacturing services to industrial OEMs and manufacturers.
