More evidence Linux is king in STB market

Distinctive Devices says it has received a $3.2 million dollar purchase order for embedded Linux based set-top boxes (STBs) that it calls “representative” of other deals. Italian digital TV vendor Goldtop will buy the devices and resell them into both terrestrial and satellite-based digital television markets.

The STBs will include LinuxTV middleware from recent Destinctive Devices acquisition Galaxis, a German company with development and manufacturing operations in India.

LinuxTV offers a broad range of digital TV reception, recording, and playback functions, including IP TV. It supports the Multimedia Home Platform (MHP) standard, a generic interface that aims to decouple interactive digital applications from the specific hardware and software details of different MHP terminal implementations.
