LinuxWorld — (press release) — MontaVista Software, Inc., developer of the Hard Hat Linux operating system for embedded applications, today announced the immediate availability of the Hard Hat Linux Cross Development Kit (CDK), version 1.2. The MontaVista CDK allows developers of pervasive Linux applications for tele- and data-communications, consumer devices, instrumentation, and industrial equipment… to develop their embedded software on readily-available desktop PCs and workstations, and integrate and deploy their finished designs on mission-specific embedded hardware.

The MontaVista CDK includes support for three host platforms, targets four microprocessor architectures, and boasts dozens of board support packages. The broad scope of embedded hardware support in the open source CDK responds to the needs of tens of thousands of developers eager to leverage Linux for their pervasive applications, thus reducing deployment cost and speeding time-to-market.

“Release of the Hard Hat Linux CDK, with its unequaled breadth of hardware support, demonstrates MontaVista?s leadership position in the field.” commented Jim Ready, CEO of MontaVista Software, Inc. “By delivering Hard Hat Linux 1.2, MontaVista stands out as an originator of new open source technology, and as a timely supplier of embedded development tools.”

“With the new 1.2 release of the HardHat Linux CDK, MontaVista has given embedded developers a cross-platform development environment for Linux that is as good, or better, than environments provided by traditional, pre-Linux embedded OS companies.” added Carl Hewitt, CTO of Kerbango, a division of 3Com Corporation. “At Kerbango, we can now make design decisions and processor choices for our new products without being concerned about using Linux as our OS, because we are confident that MontaVista will be able to support it.”

The Hard Hat Linux CDK targets embedded Intel x86 and Pentium, Motorola and IBM PowerPC, NEC MIPS and Intel StrongARM CPU architectures, offering application packages, software components and development tools optimized for embedded applications. Developers can easily leverage the dozens of Linux Support Packages, whether their project is based on commerical off-the-shelf (COTS) or custom hardware. The Kit supports CompactPCI, PC/104, and a variety of other COTS systems and reference platforms for proprietary embedded hardware and features cross development support for Red Hat 6.1/6.2, Yellow Dog Linux and Solaris host platforms. Additionally, the Hard Hat Linux CDK includes a broad array of value-added tools and technologies, including the Microwindows GUI, the ViewML embedded browser, the MontaVista real-time scheduler, and more than 60 embeddable applications and utility packages.
