HP will ship two thin clients in mid-June based on Via embedded processors and embedded Linux. The t5525 and t5125 run on Eden ESP chips clocked at 800MHz and 400MHz, respectively, and have a Linux 2.4-based OS that supports Citrix ICA, Microsoft RDP, and X-terminal protocols.

Via's Eden processors are built on the same die as its C3 desktop and Antaur mobile chips, but are optimized for passively cooled embedded applications. The Eden ESP can clock from 300MHz to 1GHz, features a lead-free EBGA package said to reduce thermal density, and has a small footprint of 35 x 35 x 1.5mm that helps designers make smaller devices, Via says. It dissipates 2.5 to 7 Watts when clocked at 1GHz, the lowest power usage of any available fanless native x86 processor, according to Via.

The new HP Compaq thin clients include 128MB of RAM and S3 graphics chips (S3 is Via's graphic chip division). The higher-end t5525 comes with 256MB of CompactFlash and includes a local Firefox browser, while the t5125 comes with 32MB of Flash. Both include single serial, parallel, and PS/2 ports, along with four USB ports. Both support Altiris central management software. Both devices measure 2.2 x 8.2 x 7.8 inches (55 x 205 x 195 mm) without the stand.

Availability

The new thin clients are expected to be available mid-June 2005. A t5520 model based on Windows CE 5 will also be available at that time.
