NEWS FLASH: ELC releases Embedded Linux Platform Spec V1.0

Dec 30, 2002 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — views

Responding to a clamoring for decisive action, the Embedded Linux Consortium (ELC) has completed, approved, and released the first Embedded Linux Platform Specification prior to year-end 2002, as projected earlier this year. From the ELC's website: “In a unanimous vote, our Board of Directors has placed the ELCPS — Embedded Linux Consortium Platform Specification — into the public domain. We are setting up a distribution mechanism now.”

Here is a statement from ELC Executive Director, Murry Shohat . . .

I am pleased to announce that the Board of the ELC unanimously approved public distribution of the ELCPS V1.0, as promised, before year's end. It's our plan to make this vendor-neutral document available through our website in a manner consistent with the distribution of version-maintained standards. We're setting this up now. In the meantime, I'll be happy to honor e-mail requests for either a PDF or html copy of V1.0. Requests should come to [email protected], and must include a full name, company name if appropriate and e-mail address. In the event that I'm overwhelmed with requests, then I beg the indulgence of the community as we work to serve all interests.

Our next step, already underway, is to develop Test Suite policy, then the actual test suites. The ELC is seeking industry help in order to accelerate the effort, and inquiries should be sent directly to me ([email protected]). We are also working hard on a fairly elaborate plan for API-centric interests based on a formal recommendation made by the core Working Group. We'll make public announcements at selected moments.

I cannot overemphasize the importance of community involvement. The ELC wants more participation from both open source developers and vendors at all points in the supply chain. Now is the time to convert potential market energy to kinetic effort. Join us now.

The spec will shortly be made available for download, according to Shohat. “If you wish to get the specification right away, please email your request to [email protected]; include your name and organization, and please specify whether you prefer PDF or HTML format,” Shohat added.
