Nokia 770 Internet Tablet coming to US

Nokia announced today that it expects to begin selling its model 770 Internet Tablet in the US next week. The device began shipping in Europe last week. The 770 is Nokia's first consumer product based on Linux.
The 770 Internet Tablet is a small (5.5 x 3.1 x 0.7 in.) tablet with a wide, 4.3-inch, 800 x 480 pixel touch-screen and integrated WiFi and Bluetooth wireless. Bundled software includes: web browser, email client, Internet radio, news reader, media players, image viewer, file manager, search, calculator, world clock, PDF-viewer, notes, sketch, games. The 770 had been initially expected to ship in September, at prices around $350, but was delayed last month, for unknown reasons. Last week, the device became available through Nokia's European direct sales website, priced at 349 Euros (~$412) including tax.
In anticipation of the kickoff of US shipments, US users can sign up for email availability alerts through a product information page on Nokia's US direct sales website.
“We are very excited to start shipments of our first Nokia Internet Tablet device,” said Janne Jormalainen, Vice President of Convergence Products, Multimedia, Nokia. “Since announced back in May we have seen huge interest in this device, particularly from the Open Source community.”
“This is the first step to creating an Open Source product for broadband and Internet services. We will be launching regular software updates. During the first half of year 2006 we will launch the next operating system upgrade to support more presence based functionalities such as VoIP and Instant Messaging”, Jormalainen added.
