Nokia 770 Internet tablet gains GPL’d VPN stack

Mar 13, 2006 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — views

A secure networking products and service company in Finland is shipping a GPL'd VPN (virtual private network) stack for the Nokia 770 Internet Tablet. Stinghorn says its Secure Business Suite (SBS) client gives 770 users access corporate resources protected by its L2TP/IPsec VPN gateway, including email, instant… messaging, VoIP (voice-over-IP), file servers, and printers.

Stinghorn's business model involves setting up, managing, and selling management software for “turn-key” remote access systems. It says its services are based on a mix of open source and proprietary products, with pricing averaging about six Euros ($7.15) per remote user, depending on options.

Stinghorn's SBS client for the Nokia 770 is intended to work with its L2TP/IPsec server, a product that also supports the normal VPN clients built into Windows XP/2000, Mac OS X Tiger/Panther, Linux, and Windows Mobile, it says. One advanced feature is the ability to support NAT topologies, in which multiple users share the same masqueraded IP address.

Availability

Stinghorn says it is distributing the 770 client under the GPL from its “Internet service.” The company did not respond by press time to a request for a direct download link.

Another VPN download for the 770, based on the free OpenVPN project, can be found here.
