An open source telephony application server project has released its second major version to developers. Bayonne 2 features a simpler driver model, support for wired and protocol-stack-based drivers, and both an interface library and voice application server. The release supports SIP and H323 on Linux and other OSes.

According to Bayonne project leader David Sugar, the initial release of Bayonne 2 has limited functionality that will be augmented over the summer months. “The initial release is aimed at allowing full public testing and development to officially begin,” says Sugar.

Sugar describes the second version of GNU Bayonne as a “telephony toolkit which continues to offer a script driven server for developing enterprise voice telephony applications for current and next generation telephone networks. In addition, GNU Bayonne 2 enables completely new voice application services to be constructed using core Bayonne services and drivers as linkable libraries.”

Availability

Bayonne 2 is available now for downloading and development under GNU/Linux, various BSDs, Mac OS X, and Windows. Additional details can be found at the GNU Telephony website.

Another open source telephony project, Asterisk, gained commercial support in March of this year.
