PowerPC, Linux converge in media gateway reference design

Apr 22, 2003 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 4 views

Vytek announced a Linux-based reference platform for developing what it calls “media gateways” — devices that combine the functionality of a TV set-top box and an Ethernet gateway. The reference platform is powered by an IBM PowerPC STB045XX system-on-chip processor running IBM's WebSphere Everywhere Embedded Software (WEES) middleware, and is supported by MontaVista Software's embedded Linux operating… system.

According to Vytek, the platform supports 100 Mbps data rates, is OSGI-compliant to support home automation applications, and provides Java support for media and entertainment applications. Other capabilities include VoIP, storage area networking, video-on-demand, and home security.

Target customers include device manufacturers, plus cable service providers and telecommunications companies wanting to deliver and remotely manage value-added services and applications, the company said.
