Qt/Embedded gains accelerated 2D graphics support

SciTech Software, Inc. announced a collaboration with Trolltech that it claims will bring “desktop quality 2D graphics acceleration and chip level compatibility to embedded Linux.”

Under the agreement, SciTech has released SNAP Graphics Industrial Embedded Solution (IES) for Qt/Embedded, while Trolltech will include a SciTech SNAP shell driver in future versions of Qt/Embedded.

SciTech says developers can use its SNAP Graphics IES to create a custom graphics driver solution for industrial embedded systems based on SciTech's off-the-shelf binary graphics drivers.

SciTech calls its SNAP drivers “a fully accelerated binary compatible graphic device driver solution” that will enable Qt/Embedded developers to add native 2D acceleration to their products.

Custom packages of SciTech SNAP Graphics drivers and the IES are available now for licensing direct from SciTech. Interested developers will also need to license Qt/Embedded.

In addition to its SNAP drivers, SciTech offers a SNAP SDK under a dual-license structure (commercial and LGPL).

“The combination of SciTech SNAP Graphics IES and Trolltech's embedded offerings makes yet another great reason to choose Linux for embedded projects,” said Hogne Tjemsland, embedded product manager at Trolltech. “Now embedded developers can benefit from Qt/Embedded's powerful, memory-efficient API while receiving all the benefits of accelerated graphics.”
