Quad-core Opteron SBC runs Debian AMD64 Linux

Win Enterprises is sampling an SHB Express (system host board) single-board computer (SBC) that supports a range of single- and dual-core Opteron processors, and runs Debian AMD64 Linux. The MB-06049 features optional high-end Nvidia graphics, and an optional daughtercard that adds a second dual-core Opteron CPU. The SBC targets industrial control, medical and military imaging, and telecom applications.

SHB Express is a PICMG spec that defines mechanical, electrical, and other characteristics of boards that use PCI Express technology to interface with PICMG 1.3 backplanes — parallel PCI technology had become a bottleneck in older PICMG systems. PICMG is an industry group that aims to leverage low-cost, commodity PC parts in highly reliable computing systems used for performance-intensive applications.

The MB-06049 has a stackable interface based on AMD's HyperTransport technology. A stackable CPU module supporting a single- or dual-core Opteron processor is optionally available.

Additional MB-06049 features include:

  • Supports 30-, 55-, or 95-Watt AMD Opteron processors
    • Single or dual core — two memory slots support up to 8GB of DDR PC-3200 ECC registered RAM
    • Quad-core, with optional daughtercard — four slots support 16GB RAM
  • Optional: integrated ATI M9 64MB graphics, based on nForce Professional 2200 chipset
  • 1 x standard UIDE interface
  • 4 x SATA with RAID
  • 1 x Gigabit Ethernet
  • 4 x USB 2.0 interfaces
  • 2 x RS232 serial ports
  • Award/Phoenix BIOS
  • ATX power supply
  • Dimensions: 13.33 x 4.99 inches (33.86 x 12.64 cm)

Win CEO Chiman Patel said, “AMD's unmatched performance-per-watt is a key selling point for customers who are also concerned with thermal and physical limitations.”

AMD's director of 64-bit embedded markets, David Rich, said, “WIN Enterprises is one of the earliest adopters of the AMD Opteron processor in an embedded design. Enterprise-class storage and telecom infrastructure are two areas [where] AMD's dual-core products [are suitable].”

Availability

The MB-06049 is sampling now, with availability expected in Q1, 2006. It will be priced at $1,000, or $1,200 with CPU daughtercard.

Win Enterprises currently offers a similar MB-06047 product in an EBX form-factor.
