Report of a new Linux-based PDA — made in India

Feb 6, 2002 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 1 views

According to a LinuxDevices.com reader, the Bangalore Times, supplement to the Time of India, this morning had a piece about a new palmtop, called “Kaii – Tamil” (for “hand”), designed and developed in Bangalore by Infomart. The word “Linux” is never explicitly mentioned, but the device reportedly runs Trolltech's Qtopia along with Opera browser and Insignia's Jeode JVM (the same basic software stack as the new Sharp Zaurus).

The specs listed in the article are . . .

  • Hardware:
    • SH3 processor at 160MHz
    • 64MB RAM
    • 32MB ROM (presumably Flash)

  • Software:
    • Qtopia
    • Opera
    • Jeode

  • Applications:
    • Mail app
    • Multimedia player (MPEG1/2, MP3)
    • Games
    • Etc.

  • Expected Pricing:
    • Monochrome: Rs. 10,000 (approx $200)
    • Colour: Rs. 15,000 (approx $300)
The text mentions an “integrated QWERTY keyboard”, but it is not visible in the picture, said the reader, who added that the device “looks pretty much like a Handspring Visor.”

Apparently they are “signing up major manufacturers” in Singapore at the moment, but no hint is given about a launch date. The information in the article comes from an “exclusive interview” with Devesh R Agarwal, the Managing Director of Infomart.

Note from editor: The reported specs of this device are nearly identical to those of the Sharp Zaurus, although the pricing indicated is substantially lower.
