SBCs boast rugged specs, Linux support

Feb 2, 2005 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — views

Axiomtek has released a trio of rugged SBCs that come with a Linux kernel, drivers, and customization tools. Two are in 3.5-inch SBC format and use Geode GX1 processors, while the third is in 5.25-inch format and uses a Pentium M. All three target high-performance, low-power, low-thermal embedded computing in extreme temperature environments.

Axiomtek announced in November that it would supply a 2.4.25-series Linux kernel and drivers with all its PC/104, 3.5-inch, 5.25-inch, and half-size SBCs.

SBC84500 and SBC84510

The SBC84500 (shown at right) and SBC84510 are implemented in a 3.5-inch SBC form-factor, and are based an “ultra low power” 300 MHz Geode CPUs said to consume less than two watts. The SBC84500 boasts four serial ports and one 10/100 Ethernet port, while the SBC84510 substitutes a second Ethernet connection for two of the serial ports.

Features common to both of these SBCs include:

  • Processor — 300 MHz Geode GX1
  • Memory — One SODIMM socket supporting up to 256 MB
  • Display — Supports both CRT and LCD
    • CRT mode — 1024 x 768 at 24 bpp
    • LCD/simultaneous mode — 1024 x 768 at 18 bpp, 60 Hz
  • Onboard CompactFlash socket
  • I/O Ports:
    • ATA-33 IDE
    • FDD
    • Keyboard and mouse
    • 2 USB 1.0
    • LPT
    • AC97 audio codec
    • 8-bit digital I/O
  • Expansion interface — PC/104 16-bit ISA

SBC83810

The SBC83810 is implemented in a 5.25-inch SBC form-factor, and is based on a 600 MHz Pentium M processor. It can optionally support dual LVDS LCD displays, with differing content and resolutions. Expansion interfaces include a full-size PCI-X socket, PC/104-Plus, and Mini PCI.

Axiomtek lists the following key features and specifications for the SBC8381:

  • Processor:
    • Socket 478 Pentium M or Celeron M (standard)
    • soldered-on BGA Celeron M (optional)
  • Memory — 184-pin DDR DIM, for up to 1 GB
  • Display:
    • Intel 855GME chipset
    • Up to 256 MB framebuffer sharing system RAM
    • Maximum resolution:
      • CRT mode — 1600 x 1200
      • LCD mode (either single or dual) — 1280 x 1024
  • Onboard Type II CompactFlash socket
  • I/O Ports:
    • 2 Parallel ATA-100 IDE
    • 2 Serial ATA-150 IDE
    • FDD
    • keyboard and mouse
    • 4 serial ports
    • 4 USB 2.0
    • Ethernet — Realtek RTL8100C Fast Ethernet standard, RTL8110S Gigabit Ethernet optional
    • LPT
    • IrDA
    • AC97 audio codec
  • Expansion interfaces:
    • PCI-X extension slot supporting four PCI masters
    • PC/104-Plus
    • Mini PCI Type III socket
