Sharp to launch location-based services for Linux PDAs

Apr 4, 2003 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — views

Sharp announced plans to launch location-based services for its Zaurus SL-series Linux PDAs (SL-A300, B500, C700) in Japan, later this month. Users will be able to download a map of the entire country of Japan via the Internet (generally not done while mobile, due to bandwidth limitations!). Then, assuming an optional GPS card is plugged into the PDA, the user's current location will be shown on the map in real-time, the company said.

Future location-based services are likely to include information on nearby restaurants and shops, sale coupons, events, and more. The GPS CompactFlash plugin card is available starting April 1, 2003.
