Software stack builds Linux/XScale NAS devices

American Megatrends Inc. (AMI) demonstrated software for network storage devices based on Linux and Intel network processors at the Intel Developer Forum (IDF) this week in San Francisco. StorTrends NXS (NAS XScale storage) is an OEM-customizable design for file-sharing appliances targeting the SOHO and SMB markets.

StorTrends NXS implements an NAS (network-attached storage) file server supporting heterogeneous protocols that include CIFS, NFS, AFP, HTTP, and FTP. Key features listed by AMI include eADS (enhanced active directory services), support for ACLs (access control lists) with 256 entries, multiple language support, NIC teaming, network client support, and NIS (network information service). The software also supports RAID 0, 1, and 5; user-based disk quotas; and email notification.

NXS also includes tools for OEM customization. OEMs can alter the look and feel, add WebUI pages, and enable and disable functionalities. Additionally, a “platform management and configuration program” simplifies porting the software to various platforms, according to AMI.

Availability

StorTrends NXS is available now. A “dual-dialog” version that adds support for IP-SAN (storage-attached network) as well as NAS is currently in pre-release testing.
