UK thin client vendor offers Linux option

Jun 3, 2005 — by Henry Kingman — from the LinuxDevices Archive — views

Netvoyager is offering three of its thin clients with an optional embedded Linux-based operating system. The “Lithium” OS supports mixed server environments and remote management, and is available on thin clients with integrated 17-inch LCD monitor, wall-mounting rails, PCMCIA and smart card readers, and more.

According to Netvoyager, the Lithium OS supports Citrix ICA, Microsoft RDP, X-Windows, Tarantella, and VNC servers, as well as terminal-based protocols such as Terminal Emulation, Telnet, and SSH. It supports multi-window and multi-protocol remote sessions, allowing users to connect to Unix and Windows sessions concurrently, Netvoyager says.

The Lithium OS supports a range of central management software, Netvoyager says, including the company's own central management solution. It can be configured with a local desktop, or to run under a kiosk session manager. A local embedded Firefox browser supports JavaScript, Java, and Macromedia Flash player. The OS also supports USB peripherals, including floppy drives, hard drives, and flash drives.

The Netvoyager LX-1040 (shown at top) thin client is integrated directly within a 17-inch LCD monitor. The unit targets limited desk space applications, such as wall- and arm-mount situations, as well as high-visibility applications, such as retail customer service areas.

The LX-1040 is powered by an Intel Pentium-III processor clocked at 1GHz, and includes 128MB each of Flash and RAM.

The Netvoyager LX-1030 (right) is an enterprise thin client with high-performance graphics capabilities. It has similar hardware specs to those of the LX-1040, minus the integrated LCD screen, and plus a PCI slot and optional smartcard reader. It targets retail customer service areas, healthcare, transportation, hospitality, and call center environments.

Availability

Netvoyager claims to be “the fastest growing UK designer of thin client technology.” It offers its thin clients and software products through channel partners and an online store. The LX-1040, LX-1030, and LX-1020 are also available with Windows CE and Windows XP Embedded.
