Webinar explores MIPS processor architecture

Semiconductor supplier PMC-Sierra will promote the MIPS architecture in a Webinar to be held Wed., Feb. 25 at 11AM PST / 2PM EST. Entitled “Why Use MIPS?”, the Webinar will explain how, as an open standard architecture available from multiple chip and core suppliers, MIPS is the semiconductor industry's “equivalent of Linux.” (more…)

Tool brings next-gen BIOS features to device designers

Intel outlines ultra-wideband wireless technology platform plans

Intel outlined plans today, at the Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco, to drive the development of a complete, standards-based, common platform for ultra-wideband (UWB) wireless technology. Intel says future UWB technology-based products built on this platform will enable high-speed transfer of multimedia content between devices in the home or office, at lower costs and without the hassle of wires. Intel, seven other launch Wireless USB Promoter Group

Intel announced the formation of the Wireless USB Promoter Group, with an eye toward delivering the first “high-speed personal wireless interconnect.” Intel claims Wireless USB personal connectivity will bring the convenience and mobility of wireless communications to high-speed interconnects for multimedia consumer electronics, PC peripherals, and mobile devices. Tri-core embedded microcontroller runs Linux

Infineon Technologies says it is now shipping a tri-core microcontroller (MCU) that can run Linux. The TC1130 MCU targets industrial and communications applications, such as programmable logic control (PLC) systems, high-performance motor drive systems, industrial communications devices such as switches, hubs and routers, and consumer applications such as set-top boxes. Phoenix aims toolsuite at replacing BIOS with CSS

PC BIOS pioneer Phoenix Technologies says it's finally time for the PC BIOS to fade away — to be replaced by something Phoenix calls “Core System Software” (CSS). Optimized GNU toolchain supports Linux, NetBSD on XScale

Wasabi Systems has completed a “highly optimized” GNU toolchain for Intel XScale Technology microprocessors supporting Linux, BSD, and Bare-Metal embedded applications. Multi-processor chipset targets multimedia wireless phones

Agere Systems unveiled a new mobile handset chipset meant to enable phone manufacturers to address the growing demand for wireless phones with multimedia functions like real-time audio and video streaming, digital photo imaging, and interactive gaming. PC/104 embedded computer standard adds PCI-only version

Over ten years after its initial inception, the PC/104 Consortium has released a PCI-only version of its popular PC/104 form-factor embedded single-board computer modules specification. “PCI-104” is essentially identical to the PC/104-Plus format which combines the ISA and PCI buses on a PC/104 form-factor module, except that the ISA expansion connector has been omitted in the new PCI-only implementation. Motorola spins SPS semi division into “Freescale Semiconductor”

Motorola revealed the name it has chosen for the company formed by the spin-out of the Mototola SPS semiconductor division later this year. “Freescale Semiconductor” — the name for the new entity — was chosen to reflect a new focus for the semiconductor company, the company says. (more…)
