PDF conversion utility targets embedded Linux devices

An open source program that converts text and .DBF files to PDF (portable document format) files has achieved its initial stable release. The “xtopdf” program is written in Python, and is suitable for use on embedded Linux devices such as PDAs that support Python, according to project leader Vasudev Ram. (more…)

DSL TV just around the corner, ABI says

DSL TV is coming, says market research firm ABI. ABI's report, “The Rise of Broadband Video,” predicts accelerating DSL adoption rates accompanied by the rollout of digital movie distribution networks, creating a $6 billion market for PC-to-TV bridges, as well as growth in other device segments where Linux is popular. Firebird database flies toward full C++ release

The Firebird Project has achieved a point release of its small, embeddable, open source, relational database which is based on a fork of Borland Interbase. Firebird V1.5.1 features support for the NPTL (native POSIX thread library), better handling of the NONE charset (character set), and more debugging options. (more…)

IntelliReach has used SuSE Linux in a spam-, virus-, and image-filtering network appliance supporting Notes, GroupWise, and Microsoft mail servers. The MessageScreen blocks 98 percent of spam, the company says, with “virtually zero” false positives. (more…)
