Commercial TCP/IP stack supports IPsec on ColdFire, PowerQUICC

Interpeak is readying a TCP/IP stack with a built-in IPsec implementation that exploits the hardware cyptographic engines in forthcoming ColdFire and PowerQUICC chips. The stack will support Linux and other embedded OSes, and deliver low-cost, cycle-sparing IPsec performance on Freescale's new industrial chips, the company says. (more…)

New hard-drive equipped Linux PDA impresses

BargainPDA has reviewed the Sharp Zaurus SL-C3000, a Linux-based PDA introduced in October. The SL-C3000 is the first Zaurus model equipped with a hard drive. It is officially available in Japan, although several distributors resell internationalized English versions. (more…)

Enterpise thin clients run embedded Linux

Igel Technology is shipping three new high-end thin clients based on embedded Linux. The Premium-series Clever Client models are based on 1GHz Via C3 processors, and include local Mozilla browsers with Flash and Acrobat plug-ins. An Enterprise model includes Java and a local SAP client. (more…)

Linux has fewer bugs, analysis shows

Linux has fewer bugs than typical commercial software, says testing tools vendor Coverity. The company says the 2.6 Linux kernel has one bug for every 5,787 lines of code, compared to the commercial software norm of one bug per 40 lines. (more…)

Linux PDA software vendor Empower has joined Texas Instruments's (TI's) DSP (digital signal processor) third-party network, and will offer TI's DSP customers products and services related to Linux PDTs (portable data terminals), including industrial, portable medical, point-of-sale (POS), asset inventory, and enterprise applications. “Open” Solaris not open enough, watchers say

Developers will spurn Open Solaris, warns eWEEK's Steven Vaughan-Nichols, if it is licensed under the “Common Development and Distribution License” (CDDL) that Sun sent to the OSI last week for consideration. Even if the OSI deems the CDDL an open source license, GPL incompatibility would hamstring Open Solaris, Vaughan-Nichols says. (more…)

GPL’d PowerQUICC distro boasts “highest performing” IPsec

Arabella has released a Linux 2.6 distribution for Freescale PowerQUICC communications processors that it says achieves exceptionally fast IPsec performance using a customized version of the 2.6 kernel's native IPsec stack. [Updated Dec. 15, 2004] — Analysts are overplaying the Linux angle in PalmSource's acquisition of China MobileSoft, wrote eWEEK's David Coursey today in his blog (weblog). MontaVista adds MIPS to its 2.6 Linux kernel eval

MontaVista customers targeting the MIPS architecture can now evaluate the 2.6 Linux kernel, using a Linux 2.6-based BSP (board support package) for MIPS kernel Technologies's Malta evaluation board. The BSP is free to existing MIPS customers, as is a similar 2.6-based BSP for x86 customers. (more…)
